Is the Cloud Computing on the "Edge" of Extinction?

Updated: Aug 19, 2022

Another very prescient piece of information from back in 2017! What happens when cloud computing (as we know it today) goes away? It is happening under our nose.

Peter Levine, an a16z partner, takes us on a crazy journey on what will happen when the hottest topic on the technology space - cloud computing - faces its end in its current form just like any other old-era technologies.

My personal favorite quotes from this video - what was your favorite?:

"If you ever want to predict the future, subtract something that is important today, and fill it with something else"

Today's world is centralized...the future won't be. The future will be another distributed model where there will be multiple edges that will gather data on its own and process them real-time.

1) Internet of Things

"A self-driving car itself is a data center with wheels. A drone is data center with wings...

These devices are aggregating a vast amount of information and that information needs to be processed in real-time."

2) Machine Learning

The only way we can look into the massive amount of data is through machine learning. The cloud in this case, will then become the field where learning happens and the last point of data gets stored, but much of the processing in the next world will move out to the edge.

So what exactly will happen in the future?

1) Sensor / data explosion will kill cloud as we know it The existing infrastructure won't be able to handle all the volume of data, so it will move out to the edge and peer-to-peer networks will proliferate to store these data.

2) The type of talent we'll be needing will be less "if-then" coders, but more of data analysts and mathematicians who will utilize data to come up with meaningful inference.
